Health & Safety legal obligations as an employer
The Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992 (DSE Regulations) requires employers to minimise the risks in VDU work by ensuring that workplaces and jobs are well designed.
Who do the regulations apply to?
The regulations apply to employees who habitually use a VDU screen as part of their work - as an employer you have an obligation to protect their eyesight from risk.
If a person regularly uses a VDU as part of their work for periods of over one hour – less in some circumstances – they are covered by the regulations.
Employers also need to provide employees exposed to certain hazards with free safety spectacles. If an employee needs prescription safety spectacles our Bollé prescription safety spectacles voucherscan cover their cost.

How eyecare vouchers help
Giving eyecare vouchers are a simple, quick and cost-effective way of complying with the DSE Regulations. Under the law, employees can ask you to:
- Pay for eye tests at regular intervals
- Pay for glasses if they are specifically needed for VDU work.
Although there’s no legal obligation to provide eye tests for occupational drivers many employers are choosing to do so.
